Exterior Dimensions
It’s obvious when looking at them that the Lexus NX is smaller than the RX. You can also see that from the exterior dimensions:

109.8 inches |
|
Length* |
182.7 inches |
192.5 inches |
|
Width* |

74.6 inches |
*Numbers based on 5-passenger configuration
Overall, the Lexus NX has a smaller wheelbase. It’s also almost 10 inches shorter overall when comparing its length with the Lexus RX. This could actually benefit the NX when you’re trying to parallel park because you may be able to park more easily or fit into a smaller space than you might if you were behind the wheel of the RX.
However, they’re fairly comparable in width, so navigating tight streets or crowded cities should be equally doable in either luxury SUV.
Lexus NX & RX Interior Dimensions
Now, let’s open the door and see if the Lexus NX cabin is smaller than the Lexus RX. Overall, we find slightly more headroom and legroom from the RX, but not by much:
| Lexus NX | Lexus RX | |
| Seating capacity | 5 passengers | 5 or 7 passengers |
| Headroom (front/rear)* | 38.2/38.1 inches | 39.4/39.1 inches |
| Legroom (front/rear)* | 42.4/36.1 inches | 44.1/38 inches |
*Numbers based on 5-passenger configuration, without moonroof
As you can see, when we compare their 5-passenger configurations, the Lexus RX has roughly two inches of additional legroom in the front and rear seats. It also has around one more inch of headroom than the Lexus NX.
However, the seating capacity is the biggest difference in their interiors. Both the Lexus NX and Lexus RX come standard as a 5-passenger vehicle. However, the available Lexus RX 350L configuration installs a third row, bumping your passenger capacity up to seven if you need it. So, if you have a large family or carpool frequently, you may prefer the RX.
Note, however, that this configuration will decrease your rear-seat legroom slightly.
Cargo Area: Which Is Smaller?

What’s interesting to note is that the Lexus NX cargo space is not much smaller than the RX. Observe their cargo dimensions here to see what we mean:
| Lexus NX (2-row) | Lexus RX (2-row) | |
| Cargo volume (behind first row)* | 54.5 cubic feet | 56.3 cubic feet |
| Cargo volume (behind second row)* | 17.7 cubic feet | 18.4 cubic feet |
*Numbers based on 5-passenger configuration
When we compare the 2-row, 5-passenger configuration of the Lexus RX with the NX, we see that the NX isn’t much smaller. In fact, there’s less than one cubic foot difference between the amount of trunk space in either SUV. With the rear seats folded, the overall cargo space in the Lexus NX is only 1.8 cubic feet smaller than the Lexus RX.
This tells us that you’ll be able to pack a relatively similar amount of luggage, no matter which SUV you take to the airport.
