2021 Lexus GX vs. 2020 Acura MDX: Performance
In terms of drivetrains, the 2020 Acura MDX comes standard with front-wheel drive (FWD). The 2021 Lexus GX, on the other hand, comes standard with a full-time 4-wheel drive system that features Active Traction Control. This will keep your vehicle steady by detecting where traction is needed. It ultimately delivers more stability than a front-wheel drive system can offer.
The Acura has something similar to the full-time 4-wheel drive system in the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system. However, it only comes standard on the higher trim levels and has to be purchased as an upgrade on the lower ones.
Horsepower and torque metrics are also an important consideration. The Lexus GX can deliver more power. While the Lexus model will get you 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, the Acura model comes in at slightly less with 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque.
2021 Lexus GX vs. 2020 Acura MDX: Capability
Looking at other metrics, both vehicles also offer towing capability. However, the Lexus GX wins out substantially by providing up to 6,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity when properly configured. The Acura MDX, on the other hand, only gets up to 3,500 pounds on its FWD models and up to 5,000 pounds on those with the SH-AWD® system.
The Lexus GX is also better equipped to take on different types of terrain. Through an available upgrade, you can get access to the Multi-Terrain Select system that will allow you to switch between different drive modes:
- Rock & Dirt
- Loose Rock
- Mud & Sand
Unfortunately, the Acura MDX doesn’t feature this kind of flexibility with its performance. Therefore, it limits what type of terrain your vehicle will be able to handle, while the Lexus GX presents more freedom to traverse different paths.
Lexus GX vs. Acura MDX: Safety Systems
Both the Lexus and the Acura models have comprehensive safety systems that provide considerable protection as you drive down quiet streets or busy highway lanes. The Lexus GX comes with the Lexus Safety System+, while the Acura comes with the AcuraWatch™ system.
There are, however, differences in what features come standard. In addition to the offerings from the Lexus Safety System+, the Lexus GX also comes standard with a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
The Acura MDX, on the other hand, does not come standard with these features. They are instead available as upgrades and are not combined, like they are on the Lexus. You’d have to purchase the blind spot information system and rear cross traffic monitor separately.
